Hi,I’m new here and desperately looking for advice,my daughter is now 32 and just out of supported living(14 yrs), we removed her back home in August due to abuse she was suffering, her flash backs and anger /fear are tearing the family apart ,she needs counselling but where can I take her ? ,I need someone who understands learning disabilities and abuse .thankyou
I’m so sorry to hear that your daughter has been through such a terrible time. I realise that this is some time on from your original post, but I hope that the following may be of some assistance.
There is an organisation called Respond who are specialists in supporting people with a learning disability who have experienced abuse. Their details are at: http://www.respond.org.uk/.
It is a good idea to speak to your community learning disability team to see if they can help you arrange professional counselling for your daughter.
Books Beyond Words also publish some titles that may help your daughter cope with the experiences she has had. You can search their catalogue here: https://booksbeyondwords.co.uk/bookshop/?category=Abuse+%26+Trauma.
I do hope your daughter can get the support she needs to deal with her experiences. I note that you say that all of this is having an impact on the family – social services may be able to provide some support to you as carers, or your local carers’ service may also be able to help. If you need assistance with this please do ring our helpline on 0808 808 1111.
With best wishes,
