Hi. We are interested in sharing experiences of having a child with a dual diagnosis of Down Syndrome and Autism.
Our wonderful adopted 7 year old has both Down Syndrome and as yet undiagnosed, but extremely likely, Autism too. As such, she presents as a real conundrum, clearly very bright in many areas (for example reads well, has good understanding, doing well in numeracy) but has poor expressive language and really struggles with social communication and interaction. We always feel that whilst the Down Syndrome presents clearly, it is the impact of the likely Autism that presents the main challenges for her. Her mainstream school is amazing and she has made fantastic progress over the course of the last couple of years in particular, and she has so many skills that are often masked by her interaction and communication difficulties. Anyone else in a similar position??!!
