Happy Birthday, FamilyHub!
In 1946, Judy Fryd – angered and frustrated by the lack of support available to her daughter Felicity, who had a learning disability – wrote to Nursery World magazine, asking that other parents of children with a learning disability, who found themselves in a similar situation, contact her.
More than 1,000 parents responded and Judy went on to suggest they should join forces and plead their cause with their local authorities. Here, Mencap was born.
To celebrate Mencap’s 70th year – and in honour of Judy – we launched an online community for parents of children with a learning disability. Parents, like Judy, who are seeking support from, or contact with others like them.
Today, FamilyHub turns one year old. Happy Birthday, FamilyHub!
Since we launched FamilyHub last year, over 1,500 parents and carers have joined, loads of discussions have been started (138, to be exact), and over 750 responses have been posted.
You’ve spoken about topics as varied as, sleeping, supported living, diagnosis, and benefits. Not to mention job hunting, deputyship, trusts and caring for siblings. You’ve also kept our resident experts busy, asking 47 detailed questions.
FamilyHub is a community to share your experiences, your triumphs and your challenges, and to offer support and guidance to others who are in the same boat.
We really hope you have enjoyed being a part of FamilyHub. Comment below with something you have learned, shared or gained by being a part of this community.
Thank you for helping to make FamilyHub the thriving community it is today.
P.S. If you haven’t taken our survey all about FamilyHub, please fill it out here. We’d love to hear your feedback on how you have found being a member so far.
P.P.S. Elly Downes, the grandaughter of our founder, Judy Fryd, has written a blog to celebrate FamilyHub, and to honour her grandma. Give it a read here.
