Hi New Mum,
Congratulations on your very special pregnancy!
Firstly can I just say you are already doing your baby proud by awcknowledging your feelings and reaching out to others. This tells me that you are going to be an absolutely wonderful mummy.
My first child is now 7 years old he was diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome a week after birth. To say it was a shock is an understatement, it was like our whole world had come crashing down around us. Here we were at what should be the happiest time in our lives feeling terrified, confused and if I’m honest grieving after the ‘normal’ baby we were expecting!
Those first few months were a roller coaster but you know what here we are 7 years later, And I could not be more proud or more in love with my little boy.
We are on a journey of discovery together, and no it isn’t always easy, there are some really tough times but I can honestly say the happiness, and triumphs far outweigh those.
My Son has taught me so much more than I could ever teach him and I can Honestly say I am a stronger, better and more confident person because of him and the challenges and triumphs we have and will face.
He absolutely enriches our lives and the unconditional love he gives is indescribable. Yes he takes longer to learn, both physically and mentally but you know what he gets there in his own time, every time and your beautiful little baby will too! And believe me when I say that the pride and love you feel in those moments will make it all worth while!
All if that said, please do not be down on yourself for having the feelings you are right now, it is ok to be frightened and upset, to think what if?, can I cope?
You know what you will!
My son has Down’s Syndrome but that isn’t who he is he is a Son, a big brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, a friend, my hero!
Your baby will be first and foremost your beautiful child, your son or daughter! And love will get you through!
There are no rights or wrongs about how to feel or what to do and you will find your own way through this.
This is just a bit about me and my family and I hope it is helpful!
You are not alone, if you want to ask anything please do.
