Hello fellow hub members!
My name is Emma, I’m a journalist for ITV News and I also have a brother who is severely autistic. In light of that, I often find myself being attracted to stories affecting families like mine.
At the moment, I’m producing a news series on the closure of an NHS hospital, which was once known as Calderstones. The decision to close the hospital was taken following the Winterbourne View scandal and the move towards transforming care.
I’m trying to find families to chat with who are affected by the closure. In my initial research I’ve found that the arguments in this story are certainly not black and white. Some families think the hospital, now ran by Mersey Care, should absolutely close - and in fact should have been shut a long time ago. I know there are already some people who have left the hospital and I’d love to know how their lives have changed in the community. Others believe that the hospital is the best place for their loved ones and they say they’ve received outstanding care there. I’ve also heard reports of families who were initially in favour of the move to transfer their loved ones into community care, but following ‘failed community placements’, they’re not so sure now.
I’m really keen to chat with families on all sides of the debate: My email is: firstname.lastname@example.org and my phone number is: 07907686429.
I’ve spoken to the press team at MENCAP who are happy for me to post this appeal.
