Hello - this is my first post and I’m hoping to find others in a similar position. My brother is 55, has Spina Bifida/hydrocephalus and both physical and learning disabilities. He self funds and although he’s lucky to be able to, it means there is no involvement from social services and it’s hard to know where to find support. He is in so-called supported living but it’s really just someone coming in 3 times a day to heat up a microwave meal. He is not able to organise any kind of social life due to his LD. Independent living is really unsuitable, but he can not afford residential care for the rest of his life. We are looking for families in a similar situation who may be interested in clubbing together to buy a property and form our own small private community with shared support and some communal activities. We are in Cambridgeshire. Does anyone have any experience of this sort of thing, and/or is anyone on a similar position? Advice welcome!
Hi @Mrsk - welcome to the forum I hope there are other families out there interested in joining up with you. It sounds like you give your brother a lot of support. I hope you have good support for yourself too. If you don’t find anyone on here you could also try the choice forum and the carers UK forum (As well as facebook groups?). Hope this helps, let us know how you get on
Hello @Mrsk
AS @frances_is_a_sibling said welcome to FamilyHub and thank you for posting.
Are you in touch with any local disability groups or charities in Cambridgeshire where you might meet families who might be interested?
There is Eddies - http://www.eddies.org.uk/
Best of luck
Sarah
Hi. As I understand it even if your brother is self funding the council are supposed to help with advice and info. It might be worth asking them - even if they can’t help they might know someone locally who can.
Hello Mrsk Social services should offer help to point him and you in the right direction even though at this moment they will not access help for him because he has too much money. You can organise care from any agency .Tell them what you want and they will do an assessment and give you a costing.Shop around.Your brother can go into residential care but when the costs get to below a threshold you will then be able to get help through support for costs however be aware that if he goes into a a residential home that is not on social services list of value places(sorry value means they can put someone in cheaper but it doesn’t mean it is not a good one).If your brother is poorly and cannot do very much for himself it could mean that Continuing Health Care funding might pay the costs. I am sorry I missed the fact that your brother has carers coming in already. Can he access a day care centre for which he will see other people socially some days or every day?
Welcome to FamilyHub. We're all here because we care about learning disability. Some of us will have questions, and most of us will have stories to share.
