My son is 23 years old and has Asperger syndrome.
He left our home in Sofia Bulgaria on 15th June this year because of, as he says, “the bad spirit of our country, spirit of communism, corruption and mafiots”.
He’s been rejected here many times. Our society in Bulgaria doesn’t accept people with learning disabilities as normal people who just need friendship and support. Here they are treated as an idiots and there is no helpful care, development or jobs. They are just doomed to suffer.
My son has got a secondary school education and his only one simple desire is to have a normal life in a friendly environment, to find a job (he is a baker), to be part of a Paralympic team (he is an athlete in long jump and swimming), to have a home, and build his own family.
He has been all across Europe alone without money, from Vienna to Innsbruck, Berlin, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Brussels, Paris, Dunkirk, London, Liverpool. He is excellent at orientating himself and never been lost. The problem is that he speaks English, but not perfectly, to be able to complete applications for permission to work and live in the UK.
He is now in Liverpool and is in temporary accommodation in White chapel centre. But he needs special care and a place to live.
I contacted a local Mencap office but they don’t have protected housing either.
I was in Watford a month ago for a few days staying with a family friend, and tried to persuade my son to come back with me to Bulgaria. But he escaped 3 hours before the flight and I didn’t manage to take him back. As is written in the values of Mencap, “Each person with a learning disability has a right to choose where and with whom they want to live.” So my son has chosen to live in the UK. He told me that he is happier there than in Bulgaria.
He sleeps on the floor in WCh he lost all his clothes and belongings. His mobile was broken and I haven’t any contact with him. Only sometimes when the social workers let him to call me. He hasn’t any money to buy new one. I can’t travel to the UK again because in Bulgaria I receive £230 per month and it is impossible even to buy a plane ticket again and to rent a room in a hostel.
Beg all of you of pardon of my long letter and my English is not perfect. But it’s all come from my concerned and crying mother’s heart.
Thank you in advance if somebody could give me advice and help to my son. He lives a second life. Because the accident with high electricity (he touched a train cable when he was 11 years old) he’s alive only because God has shown a mercy to him and me. I was widow at that time. And he is my only child.
May God bless you.
